Exfoliation

Fact
The top layer of our skin, the epidermis, is naturally worn away at the rate of 10 billion cells every 24 hours, to be replaced by a never-ending succession of new cells.

For our skin to remain clear, smooth, and translucent, the surface layer needs to be kept free of any superfluous cells and its excretory activities able to continue unimpeded. That is why we exfoliate - to buff away the dead cells that might otherwise clog our pores and dull our complexion.
The very act of removing this redundant top layer appears to stimulate cell re production lower down in the epidermis - an increasing concern as our skin begins to age. Although any skin will benefit from gentle exfoliation once a week to refine the texture and clear the pores, take care: overenthusiastic exfoliation can undermine the berrier function of the skin and may even damage the underlaying tissue.

Tips

  • For a physical exfoliator or scrub, choose between a shop-bought product or a homemade preparation using a natural exfoliator such as oatmeal recipe (for sensitive skin)
. 2 heaping teaspoons fine oatmeal
    . 2 teaspoons double cream
Combine ingredients, apply to skin, and rub with a vry light action using the balls of your fingers, then rinse off. Do not apply sustained pressure to any particular blemish.
  • When you exfoliate, apply the paste to damp skin and rub very lightly using circular movements. Ensure you stroke rather than scour, and moisturize your skin well afterward.
  • Newly exfoliated skin is more vulnerable to sun damage so apply a sun block if you are going out in the sun
